The Best Scratching Posts For Cats

By: Liz Newsome

Having a cat living with you can bring hours of joy and laughter - especially when they are playful.  Who doesn't love the sight of a cat running after a ball of twine or pouncing on an empty paper bag moving in the wind.

As much fun as it is, play with cats inevitably involves scratching.   Cat's need to scratch not only to sharpen and trim their claws, but also to mark their territory.

According to cat research at the Feline Behavioral Society another major reason that cats scratch is to communicate.  In the wild, by clawing at tree, for example, a cat is letting other cats know where he is.   Both wild and pet cats return to the same item to scratch.  Often, it seems that they indeed have favorite places.

If one of your cat's favorite places to scratch is your furniture, you really need to get a scratching post.   Scratching posts for cats will give your feline friend an alternative to clawing your furniture and will save your furniture and carpet.

Cats love scratching on thick carpet and rugs, which is way many cat scratchers are covered with them.   But the best scratching posts for cats are made from sea grass, which is also known as "sisal."

There are two main reasons that sea grass scratching posts are superior to regular carpet covered posts.   First, the sea grass posts are much more durable than their carpet counterparts.   In some independent tests, they last up to 5 times longer.   Second, cats seem to be more attracted to the natural fiber of sea grass than to carpet.   Perhaps this is because sea grass is a natural fiber.

Another advantage of using a sea grass scratching post for your cat is that sea grass is much more environmentally friendly than carpeting.   It's easy to harvest without the use of any chemicals or technology  and is 100% renewable.
